Description

Through the Trees: Parki Beach is an original plein air watercolour painted at Parki Beach on the coast of Chattogram, Bangladesh, in 2022. Created directly from observation during a quiet afternoon, the work captures an intimate encounter with the shoreline, where the landscape is experienced through the shelter of coastal trees.

Rather than presenting a panoramic view of the beach, the composition frames the sea through a foreground of tree trunks and foliage. Patches of sunlight fall across the grass while fishing boats drift quietly on the calm water beyond. Larger cargo vessels rest on the distant horizon, subtly reminding viewers that this peaceful coastline also exists within one of Bangladesh’s busiest maritime regions.

The contrast between the shaded foreground and the luminous sea creates a strong sense of spatial depth and visual rhythm. Loose yet deliberate brushstrokes preserve the freshness of direct observation, while the transparent qualities of watercolour convey the warmth, light, and humidity of a tropical afternoon.

The painting celebrates the simple act of pausing beneath the trees and quietly observing the meeting of land, water, and everyday life.

Artist’s Note

I painted this work while sitting beneath the trees at Parki Beach during the afternoon.

Instead of walking directly onto the open beach, I was drawn to the cool shade beneath the coastal trees. From there, the sea appeared in fragments between the trunks and branches. Fishing boats moved quietly across the water while larger ships rested on the horizon.

What interested me most was this layered view. The trees became a natural frame, making the landscape feel more intimate and contemplative. I wanted to preserve that quiet moment of observation rather than simply record the coastline.

Series Note

Landscapes of Presence

This series consists of watercolours created directly from observation in nature. Painted outdoors, the works respond to changing light, atmosphere, weather, and the immediate experience of place.

Rather than reconstructing remembered landscapes, these paintings preserve lived encounters with rivers, forests, hills, and coastal environments, revealing the artist’s continuing dialogue with the natural world.
