Description

Monsoon Memory: Deang is an atmospheric watercolour inspired by the artist’s enduring connection with the rural landscape of Deang, located near the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Painted in Dhaka during a rainy day in 2018, the artwork was created entirely from memory rather than direct observation.

For the artist, Deang has long been a place of reflection and creative renewal. Its rolling hills, winding waterways, changing skies, and open agricultural fields have repeatedly appeared throughout his landscape practice. In this painting, however, the landscape is not reconstructed with documentary precision; it is reimagined through memory and emotion.

Dark monsoon clouds gather dramatically above sunlit green hills, while a quiet stream winds through the foreground, creating a visual rhythm that guides the viewer across the composition. The contrast between approaching rain and warm light reflects the changing moods of the Bangladeshi monsoon, where calmness and intensity often coexist within the same moment.

Loose yet confident brushwork allows the transparency of watercolour to evoke moving air, moisture, and shifting light. Rather than describing every detail, the painting invites viewers to experience the atmosphere of a remembered place—one shaped equally by nature and memory.

Artist’s Note

Some landscapes continue to live within us, even when we are far away from them.

I painted this work in Dhaka on a rainy day while remembering the monsoon season in Deang. I was not looking at the landscape itself; I was painting the feeling of returning to it through memory.

The gathering clouds, the winding water, and the quiet hills represent more than a particular location. They remind me of the peaceful moments I have experienced while walking and painting in Deang over many years.

For me, landscape painting is not simply about recording scenery. It is about preserving the emotional atmosphere that certain places leave inside us.

Series Note

Landscapes of Memory

This series explores landscape as an emotional archive rather than a geographical document. Inspired by direct observation, travel, and personal recollection, these paintings reveal how memory reshapes familiar places across time.

Through transparent watercolour, expressive brushwork, and atmospheric light, the works invite viewers to experience landscape as lived memory rather than fixed geography.
