I have painted the landscapes of Deyang since my student years. Every return reveals a different season, a different light, and increasingly, a different landscape.

During the winter of 2024, I became deeply aware of the visible scars left by large-scale earth-cutting associated with nearby industrial expansion. Rather than documenting these changes literally, I wanted to preserve the emotional tension between the resilience of nature and the pressure of continuous human intervention.

This painting is both an act of observation and a personal reflection on a landscape that has shaped my artistic life.

Scars of Deyang reflects a changing landscape in the Deyang Hills near the Karnaphuli estuary in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Painted during the winter of 2024, the work portrays a season when the hills become dry and exposed, revealing both their natural character and the increasing marks of human intervention.

The composition is centred on a cut hillside overlooking a quiet body of water. Transparent watercolour washes capture the contrast between rugged earth, deep shadows, and luminous winter light. Rather than depicting a picturesque landscape, the painting records a place transforming, where expanding industrial development and earth-cutting have begun to alter the natural balance of the environment.

For the artist, Deyang is a landscape of personal memory and long-term observation. Returning to the area over many years has allowed him to witness not only its enduring beauty but also the gradual changes that have reshaped its terrain. This work stands as both a landscape painting and a quiet reflection on the fragile relationship between human ambition and the living environment.
