Guardian of the Living Earth is a symbolic pastel drawing created in 2024 during a period of growing public concern over the removal of roadside trees in Dhaka. The work was produced while the artist was preparing to participate in a series of environmental protest performances organized in support of citizens and environmental activists advocating for the protection of urban trees.

Rather than functioning as a documentary illustration of the campaign, the artwork transforms environmental activism into a poetic visual language. At its centre stands a simplified green human figure, merging visually with the surrounding vegetation. The figure appears neither entirely human nor entirely botanical, suggesting an inseparable relationship between humanity and the living world.

Behind the figure, a luminous yellow circular form evokes both the sun and a symbolic source of life, while flowing linear forms resembling roots, vines, or ecological networks spread across the sky. Emerging plants, seeds, and organic motifs reinforce the idea that life is sustained through invisible systems of interdependence.

The composition avoids direct confrontation or visual aggression. Instead, it presents environmental protection as an act of care, coexistence, and shared responsibility. The work proposes that the destruction of trees is not simply the loss of vegetation but the weakening of the ecological relationships that sustain human life itself.

The artwork later became the principal visual image for banners and public campaign materials supporting the environmental movement, extending its role beyond the gallery into public civic engagement.

Artist’s Note

This drawing was created while preparing for a public environmental performance in Dhaka.

At that time, many roadside trees in Dhanmondi were being cut down, prompting widespread concern among environmental activists, artists, and local residents. I joined the movement because I felt that protecting trees is not only an environmental issue but also a cultural and ethical responsibility.

The green figure represents humanity as part of nature rather than separate from it. I wanted the body to feel as though it was growing from the same living system as the surrounding plants and roots.

Later, this image was used on banners supporting the environmental campaign. For me, that transformation—from studio artwork to a public symbol—became part of the artwork’s own life.

Curatorial Note

Unlike conventional environmental illustrations, Guardian of the Living Earth does not seek to persuade through documentary evidence or political slogans. Instead, it constructs a symbolic ecology in which the human body, vegetation, light, and organic growth become interconnected metaphors.

The artwork occupies a space between contemporary drawing, environmental activism, and social practice. Its subsequent use as a campaign banner expands the work beyond exhibition space, demonstrating how visual art can participate directly in civic discourse while retaining its poetic autonomy.
