Description

The Road Home: Chattogram Hills is a watercolour landscape inspired by the artist’s memories of the winding hill roads surrounding Chattogram, Bangladesh. Painted in 2016 from memory while working in Dhaka, the artwork reflects not a single documented location but an emotional landscape shaped by years of travel, observation, and attachment to the region.

A quiet road descends gently through lush vegetation before disappearing into the distant valleys beneath an expansive sky. The composition naturally invites the viewer’s eye to travel beyond the foreground, following the road toward the horizon where hills gradually dissolve into soft atmospheric light. The landscape conveys both openness and intimacy, suggesting a journey that is as emotional as it is geographical.

Rather than emphasizing architectural landmarks or human activity, the painting celebrates the enduring dialogue between road, forest, sky, and distant hills. The transparent qualities of watercolour create a luminous atmosphere in which changing light and seasonal colours become central elements of the composition.

Although created in the studio, the painting preserves the freshness of direct visual memory. It reflects the artist’s long-standing relationship with the landscapes of Chattogram, where familiar roads often become pathways leading back to childhood, travel, and personal reflection.

Artist’s Note

Some roads remain with us long after we have travelled them.

This painting was created in my Dhaka studio while remembering the hill roads of Chattogram. I was not trying to reconstruct a particular place with geographical accuracy. Instead, I wanted to paint the feeling of looking down a familiar road that quietly disappears into the landscape.

For me, these roads have always suggested possibility. They connect villages, forests, hills, and people, but they also connect memory with the present. Whenever I remember Chattogram, these winding roads return together with the changing light, distant hills, and the peaceful rhythm of the landscape.

Series Note

Landscapes of Memory

This series explores landscape as an emotional archive rather than a geographical record. Inspired by travel, lived experience, and personal recollection, the paintings reconstruct places through memory instead of direct observation.

Using transparent watercolour and expressive brushwork, the series investigates how familiar landscapes continue to exist within memory, carrying feelings of belonging, movement, and quiet reflection across time.
