Description

Harvest Along the Matamuhuri is a plein air watercolour painted during the artist’s visit to the Matamuhuri River region in Bandarban, Bangladesh, in 2024. Created directly from observation, the work celebrates the quiet relationship between rural life, fertile landscapes, and flowing water.

A narrow river glides gently through the foreground, where a small wooden boat rests beside the bank. A figure bends toward the water while another waits quietly inside the boat, suggesting the rhythm of everyday life rather than a staged narrative. Beyond the river, expansive green paddy fields stretch toward distant hills beneath a sky filled with drifting monsoon clouds.

The composition balances openness and intimacy. The broad agricultural landscape conveys abundance and continuity, while the small human figures remind viewers that these environments are shaped by generations of people living in close harmony with the land and water.

Executed with transparent watercolour washes and expressive brushwork, the painting captures the changing light, fresh greenery, and calm atmosphere characteristic of the river valleys of southeastern Bangladesh.

Rather than depicting an idealized countryside, the work records a lived moment in which nature and human activity coexist with quiet dignity.

Harvest Along the Matamuhuri

Artist’s Note

I painted this work while travelling beside the Matamuhuri River.

What stayed with me was not only the beauty of the landscape but the quiet rhythm of everyday rural life. The small boat, the people by the water, the rice fields, and the distant hills all seemed connected through the slow movement of the river.

When painting outdoors, I try to preserve the atmosphere of a place before the light changes. This work became less about describing the landscape and more about remembering the peaceful relationship between people and the environment that supports them.

Series Note

Landscapes of Presence

This series consists of watercolours painted directly from observation in nature. Created outdoors, the works preserve the changing conditions of light, weather, and atmosphere while responding intuitively to the landscape before the artist.

Rather than reconstructing remembered places, these paintings celebrate direct encounters with rivers, hills, forests, and rural communities, revealing the living relationship between people and the natural environment.
