Artwork Description:

Searching for the Missed Mystery of Life: Roots of the Cosmos is an early conceptual drawing from Abu Naser Robii’s long-term series Searching for the Missed Mystery of Life, created during a formative period of artistic research in 2009.

The drawing imagines the human body as a living landscape where consciousness, nature, and the cosmos exist within a single interconnected system. Rather than separating the individual from the environment, the composition suggests that mountains, rivers, roots, stars, sunlight, and the human body participate in the same continuous cycle of transformation.

At the centre of the composition, a solitary human figure extends into a vast network of root-like structures reaching deep into the earth, while the upper body opens toward celestial space beneath a radiant sun. The surrounding landscape unfolds not as a geographical location but as a symbolic terrain where internal and external realities merge.

Created with artist-grade Chinese ink on archival acid-free paper using an ultra-fine Japanese nib pen, the drawing was developed through thousands of carefully repeated dots and delicate linear marks. The slow accumulation of these gestures transforms the image into a record of sustained attention as much as a visual composition.

Recurring motifs including the sun, stars, rivers, roots, mountains, and the human figure reflect the artist’s continuing exploration of humanity’s inseparable relationship with the larger rhythms of the universe.

Artist’s Note:

This drawing belongs to a period when I was searching for a visual language capable of expressing the invisible connections between the body and the universe.

I became increasingly interested in the possibility that the human body could be understood as a living landscape rather than an isolated form. In this drawing, roots, rivers, mountains, and celestial space do not exist outside the body. They emerge as extensions of the same living system.

Like many of my ink drawings from this period, the work was created through thousands of repeated dots and fine lines. The repetition itself became an essential part of the artwork. It allowed drawing to develop into a contemplative practice, where sustained physical action gradually transformed my state of attention.

The celestial elements appearing throughout my work, including the moon, stars, and the sun, are not decorative symbols. They reflect my ongoing interest in the subtle relationship between human experience and the larger cycles of nature and the cosmos. Through these recurring images, I attempt to visualise an interconnected existence that extends beyond the boundaries of the physical body.

For me, the creative process remains as significant as the completed image, because it is within that process that the artwork and the artist continuously transform one another.
