Where Two Rivers Meet is a contemplative watercolour landscape that explores the relationship between place, memory, and emotional geography. Although inspired by a quiet riverside scene in Nagano, Japan, the painting ultimately becomes a meeting point between two distant landscapes—the artist’s experience abroad and his childhood memories in southern Bangladesh.

In 2010, while participating in the Nippon Performance Art Festival in Japan at the invitation of Japanese performance artist Seiji Shimoda, the artist spent time walking around Shimoda’s hometown in Nagano. Near the artist’s residence flowed a narrow, gently moving stream surrounded by mature trees and seasonal vegetation. The peaceful atmosphere unexpectedly awakened vivid memories of the small canal behind the artist’s childhood home in South Patenga, Chattogram.

That canal, once surrounded by dense wild vegetation, was one of the most significant landscapes of the artist’s early life. Countless childhood days were spent fishing, collecting wild fruits, wandering through the shaded banks, and discovering the quiet rhythms of nature.

Several years later, while revisiting photographs from the Japan journey in his Dhaka studio, these two places gradually merged in memory. Rather than reproducing the Japanese landscape exactly, the artist painted the emotional landscape that emerged when the present and the past became inseparable.

The transparent layers of watercolour allow light to travel naturally through the composition, while expressive brushwork captures not only the physical appearance of trees and flowing water but also the fragile nature of remembrance itself. The painting becomes an invitation to experience landscape not merely as geography but as memory carried across time and distance.
