Before the Rain: Matamuhuri
Artist’s Note
I have always enjoyed painting directly in nature because the landscape never remains still.
On this day, I sat beside the Matamuhuri River during the monsoon, quietly observing the changing light and reflections on the water. While painting, dark clouds began gathering and I realised the rain would arrive very soon. I worked as quickly as possible before packing my materials and leaving the riverbank.
Looking at this painting now, I remember not only the river itself but also the atmosphere of that afternoon—the wind, the changing sky, and the quiet excitement of trying to complete a painting before the rain.
Series Note
Landscapes of Presence
This series is created directly from observation in nature. Rather than reconstructing remembered places, these paintings respond to the immediate experience of changing light, weather, atmosphere, and landscape. Working outdoors allows each painting to preserve the unique rhythm of a specific place and moment, making the act of painting itself part of the artwork.
