Description

Before the Rain: Matamuhuri captures a fleeting moment along the banks of the Matamuhuri River during the monsoon season of 2025. Painted directly on location, the work reflects the immediacy and unpredictability of plein air painting, where changing weather becomes an active participant in the creative process.

Viewed through a natural screen of trees and shrubs, the river quietly winds through the landscape, its pale surface reflecting the soft light of an overcast sky. The foreground branches frame the composition, creating a sense of standing within the landscape rather than observing it from a distance. Loose, confident brushstrokes suggest movement in foliage, shifting light, and the humid atmosphere that often precedes heavy rain.

The painting was completed under the pressure of an approaching storm. As rain clouds gathered, the artist worked rapidly before leaving the riverside. This urgency remains visible in the economy of brushwork and the freshness of the transparent watercolour washes. Rather than diminishing the work, the unfinished spontaneity becomes part of its visual strength, preserving the immediacy of direct experience.

The artwork is not only a record of a landscape but also of a particular moment in time—when observation, weather, and artistic intuition converged beside the Matamuhuri River.

Artist’s Note

I have always enjoyed painting directly in nature because the landscape never remains still.

On this day, I sat beside the Matamuhuri River during the monsoon, quietly observing the changing light and reflections on the water. While painting, dark clouds began gathering and I realised the rain would arrive very soon. I worked as quickly as possible before packing my materials and leaving the riverbank.

Looking at this painting now, I remember not only the river itself but also the atmosphere of that afternoon—the wind, the changing sky, and the quiet excitement of trying to complete a painting before the rain.

Series Note

Landscapes of Presence

This series is created directly from observation in nature. Rather than reconstructing remembered places, these paintings respond to the immediate experience of changing light, weather, atmosphere, and landscape. Working outdoors allows each painting to preserve the unique rhythm of a specific place and moment, making the act of painting itself part of the artwork.
