Description

Whispers of Matamuhuri Valley is an original plein air watercolour painted during a journey through the Bandarban Hill District of southeastern Bangladesh in 2024. Created beside one of the mountain-fed streams flowing into the Matamuhuri River, the painting captures a fleeting moment of quiet harmony between water, hills, and rural life.

The composition opens onto a gently flowing stream winding through a broad valley, framed by lush green mountains rising on either side. Scattered village houses rest quietly at the foot of the hills, suggesting a landscape where human presence exists in balance with the surrounding environment rather than dominating it.

Painted directly on location, the work preserves the freshness and spontaneity of immediate observation. Transparent washes of watercolour describe the changing light across the hills, while confident brushwork conveys the movement of flowing water and the rich textures of vegetation. Instead of recording every physical detail, the painting seeks to communicate the atmosphere of the place—the stillness, humidity, and quiet rhythm that define the landscape.

The work reflects the artist’s continuing interest in the river valleys and hill landscapes of southeastern Bangladesh, where water has shaped both the physical terrain and the cultural life of local communities for generations.

Whispers of Matamuhuri Valley

Artist’s Note

Whenever I paint outdoors, I try to listen before I begin.

During my visit to Bandarban, I spent time beside this mountain stream feeding the Matamuhuri River. The landscape was remarkably quiet. The water moved gently through the valley while the surrounding hills seemed to hold the entire scene in silence.

What attracted me was not simply the beauty of the place but the relationship between the flowing water, the distant homes, and the protective presence of the hills. I wanted to preserve that feeling before the light changed.

For me, painting outdoors is not only about observing nature; it is about becoming part of its rhythm, even for a short time.

Series Note

Landscapes of Presence

This series consists of watercolours created directly from observation in nature. Working outdoors allows each painting to preserve the changing conditions of light, weather, atmosphere, and place. Rather than reconstructing remembered landscapes, these works document lived encounters with the natural environment while maintaining the expressive freedom of watercolour.

Each painting becomes both a landscape and a record of the artist’s presence within that landscape.
