Description

The First Light explores the fragile psychological and spiritual atmosphere of dawn—the brief moment when darkness gradually yields to light and the world appears to awaken into a new state of awareness.

Created around 2012, the painting was developed entirely from imagination in the artist’s studio. Rather than depicting a specific geographical location, the work visualises an inner experience of morning, shaped by long-standing reflections on transitional time and the subtle emotional influence of changing natural light.

The composition is structured around the emergence of the rising sun at the horizon. Its first rays illuminate an expansive landscape of grasses, distant fields, and open sky. A solitary tree anchors the left side of the composition, standing as both witness and participant within the daily cycle of renewal. Above, shifting clouds retain traces of the departing night while gradually opening to daylight.

Executed through transparent layers of watercolour, the painting balances quiet observation with emotional intensity. The broad sky occupies much of the composition, emphasizing time itself as the central subject. Here, landscape becomes less a physical place than a field of consciousness where light, atmosphere, and memory converge.

Rather than illustrating sunrise, The First Light meditates on the invisible transition through which hope, perception, and awareness quietly emerge.

The First Light

Artist’s Note

For many years I have been deeply interested in transitional moments of the day.

Morning and evening affect me in very different ways. The first light of sunrise carries a sense of possibility and renewal, while the moments before sunset often bring a completely different emotional intensity. These changing states of light have influenced both my paintings and my performance practice for many years.

This work was not painted from observation. It was created from an inner image that gradually formed through repeated contemplation of dawn.

For me, sunrise is not simply the beginning of another day. It is a reminder that every transformation begins almost invisibly, long before we become fully aware of it.

Series Note

Searching for the Missed Mystery of Life

This ongoing body of work investigates the invisible relationships between human consciousness, time, nature, memory, and existence. Through painting, drawing, and performance, the series explores moments of transition in which ordinary experience reveals deeper emotional, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions.

Rather than presenting fixed meanings, the works invite viewers to reflect upon the subtle mysteries that continue to shape everyday life.
