Threshold of Evening is a contemplative watercolour that explores one of the artist’s most enduring subjects: the transitional moment between day and night. Rather than depicting a specific landscape, the painting reflects an internal psychological experience shaped by light, atmosphere, and the passage of time.

The composition presents a quiet horizon beneath a dramatic evening sky. A solitary tree, a simple roadside, and suspended cloths create a sparse landscape where human presence is suggested rather than described. The expanding sky dominates the image, becoming a metaphor for the invisible emotional transformation that accompanies twilight.

For the artist, the moments immediately before sunset have always carried an unusual psychological intensity. Throughout his life, he has experienced a persistent feeling of confinement if he remains indoors during this transitional time of day. This recurring sensation became the starting point for a broader artistic investigation into the emotional and physiological effects of twilight.

Painted around 2011, the work forms part of an ongoing exploration that also informed a performance project first developed during the artist’s residency at the Uijae Museum of Korean Art in Gwangju, South Korea, in 2007. Across both painting and performance, twilight is approached not simply as a natural phenomenon but as a threshold—a temporal space where perception, memory, and consciousness become especially sensitive.

The restrained palette of cool blues and violets, together with transparent washes of watercolour, creates an atmosphere of suspension. The landscape appears to pause between two states, inviting viewers to inhabit the fragile interval where daylight slowly gives way to night.
